Guitarcast #1 | Guitar Schools : are they worth it?

Thanks to lockdown, we are starting a brand NEW series of conversations and deep dives into all things guitar, music, recording (and more!).

In the first episode, Neil Bruce and Sanjit Suchak jump straight in at the deep end, with the controversial question, Guitar Schools : are they worth it?

Have you considered going to a guitar or music school? We give an honest insight into the pros and cons from our experiences.

Soundscapes for isolation

Lockdown is having a massive impact on us all, especially with the uncertainty that the COVID pandemic is bring to every single one of us on the planet. Since access to the real world is no longer possible for many of us around the globe, I wanted to try and help in the only way I really could, with sound.

Sound and soundscape has the power of evocation, the power to reignite memories of the past and give hope for the future. I have been fortunate to have a) travelled extensively in a pre-lockdown era and b) been able to take my sound recorders and microphones with me to capture the moment.

The only thing I can offer right now are these soundscapes, a chance to immerse yourself in the sounds of the ‘old’ real world. Here is a collection of soundscapes from around the world, from coffee shops to natural sounds, via airports, train stations and everything in between.

These recordings were made of a period of nearly 20 years, across continents. Many of the recordings are binaural, so use headphones to experience the immersive surround soundscape.

Enjoy and stay safe.

See you on the other side of this all…

Danny Elfman Masterclass Review (and another rant about education!)

Following on from my Hans Zimmer Masterclass, I was fortunate enough to be brought the Danny Elfman Masterclass as a present (Thank you!!) I have been overseeing and taking part in a few online courses (both paid for and free), as well of course as my own online youtube videos and lesson content. Once again, I am surprised by a number of students reaction to the teaching and more importantly, their expectation of what they are supposed to get from a class, tutorial, workshop or lecture. The notes below are a reflection on the criticism towards the Masterclass series.

Film music challenge

As you may have seen we are currently partaking in a film music challenge, where the goal is to create 1 new film with 1 new piece of music, every Friday for a year! The question is can it be done! Well we are already up to week 3 and it is going really well.

Last weeks piece broke out the amazing Spitfire British Drama Toolkit library, along with some of the sounds from the amazing Spitfire LABS libraries. If you have’t downloaded then, then I think they are a must….all at the bargin price of FREE!

Here is a playlist of all the tracks for far! Better get started on this week’s (given that it is Thursday evening!)

Light B4 Sound - Friday Film Challenge

2020 is the year to simply just be more creative, to get projects finished and try to be as artistic as possible. So similar to the Daily Creation Challenge that I performed around 9 years ago (where I wrote and posted a piece of music every day for a year and a half!!), I am now doing another Challenge.

The rules are simple, in 2020…

  • 1 Film - Every Friday for a year.

  • Rules are that the film must be more that 1m30s.

  • The film and music must be original.

  • They will be uploaded to the Light B4 Sound website.

And here is the first piece! Filmed in Middlewich, Cheshire.

Enjoy

Peace

Neil

Is this the most under rated pedal of all time?? The American Sound

So here is a review of the Generic American Sound pedal, which I think is just really fantastic especially given that it costs less than £30.
