Ephemeral data streams - Spencer Bruce
Inspired by Duchamp’s idea of ‘infrathin’ or the rapidly fading trace or aura of something that was.
My personal compositional work has always been a blur between sound art and music, the manipulation and arrangement of frequencies to form what I hope are engaging sonic narratives. The idea of crossing the boundaries between melody, harmony, rhythm and sonic textures, creating a hybrid space between the sonic and the musical, my goal is to create immersive sound and music-scapes that a listener can immerse themselves in, to question and to explore.
The Music Room Community Project came at just the right time as it gave me the chance to return to my own artist expression and practice. I've been creating a lot of music and sound content over the last few years for other projects but not really had the time to engage with my own creative soul, Ephemeral Data Streams and the Music Room group’s support is that return. Using a combination of field recordings, shortwave radio, electromagnetic recordings, AI generated text and voice, as well as tape and worldizing techniques with manipulation to form the narrative of decaying data.
Trying to build a world where one can hear different things every time they listen, but at the same time soundscapes which can sit in the background and not obstruct one's thoughts or presence. Hopefully the listener will find hidden depths and hidden sounds.
The idea behind the concept is inspired by the amounts of data that humans now produce on a daily basis, where data is now one of our main commodities and posing the question of what happens to that data as it is used and floats around in wiring, space and the airwaves. A memory of what once was, the memory of interactions, emotions and being, as it exists and then decays, the syncronic sound representation of data streams at this moment in time.
